NFL Ramblings

I am going to try and start a weekly column where I ramble on about the NFL and more specifically how my fantasy football teams are faring. I figure this will give me a chance to rant about underperforming top picks and break down the Chicago Bears and their inevitable playoff run.

  • Let me start off by saying how impressive Chicago looked last week against hated rival Detroit Lions. Maybe it is because the Lions are awful, but the Bears looked like they did back in 2001 when they went 13-3. A serviceable QB, then Jim Miller now Kyle Orton, a fantastic group of defenders led by a healthy Urlacher, a go to WR in Muhammed and a powerful running game in Jones and eventually Benson. While 13-3 might be a stretch this year, with the horrendous starts from Detroit, GB and Minny (1-5 total), I can't see why winning the NFC North would be all that suprising.
  • Michael Vick is by far the most overrated fantasy player of all time. Seriously, why would anyone want him as a starting QB? He throws for 125 yards a game and gives you maybe, one touchdown pass. He gets picked off more than he throws TD's, fumbles regularly and gets sacked a suprisingly high amount of drop backs (every 8 times!!). And yet every game, he breaks off a Barry Sanders like 22 yard run and the announcers go ballistic. "Vick is the most explosive, entertaining player in this league" and so on. Here is a great fantasy baseball analogy: Let's say that Michael Vick is a pitcher. He really sucks and usually goes 4-18 with a 7.5 era and 2.3 whip. But he bats .280, steals 10 bases and hits 6 HRs (which is unheard of from pitchers) Would you really think that he is a top 5 fantasy pitcher? Of course not. Until there is a slot on my starting lineup for "running quarterbacks" which only counts rushing yards, there is no way I would ever want him on my team.
